Perspective

The first Stephen Thomas record, Perspective, was released in 2008. It featured 10 songs penned by Stephen, who sang all lead vocals and played acoustic and electric guitar. He was backed up by stellar Ottawa musicians, including, Nic Carey on keyboards and trombone, Izzy Martinez on lead guitar and bass, Tirso on drums, Angel Arouz on percussion, with Maurice Préfontaine on tenor sax and backing vocals by Cyndi Kennedy, Sabrina Brenninkmeyer and Rachelle Behrens.

“Perspective was actually quite introspective,” observes Stephen. “Much of it reflected my folk influences but there was some rock and funk there as well. It was a lot of fun and has been well received.”

Horatio Street

Not satisfied to rest on his achievements, this poetic, soft-spoken journeyman released a second studio album in 2010, assisted by some familiar faces and long-time cohorts.

Influenced by long-time band mate and collaborator Dave Johnston, Horatio Street meanders comfortably through rock, reggae and folk to offer a potpourri of flavours to stimulate the listener.

Centred around a song spun from Stephen’s days in New York living on Horatio Street, Stephen plays acoustic and electric guitar, and supplies nearly all lead vocals. Backing musicians include Dave Johnston on four and five string bass, drummers Brian Dupuis and Jorge Reyes, Rob Rose on lead guitar and Nic Carey on keyboards, with percussion by Alvaro Kreitz. Vocals from Cyndi Kennedy and Tara Heft blended harmonically. Horn and sax solos were added by Rene Lavoie, with Veronique Turcotte playing violin.

Forecast

Just in time for a new year, the Stephen Thomas Band has just released a five-song EP called Forecast. This sampler features new songs that will be part of a full-length album later this year.

Aptly titled, Forecast is a solid indicator of what’s to come – more of Stephen’s unique brand of infectious music.

Stephen shares vocals with the dynamic Tara Heft, backed by Dave Johnston on bass, Gary Epton on drums and Sean McGee at the keyboards.
